Night hawks

During the night, in the dark of the alleys of Shibuya the silhouette of a couple can be glimpsed briskly descending the love hotel hill to blend in with the passers-by of the chaotic Dogenzaka.

The history of love hotels can be traced back to the 17th century, in the early Edo period, when establishments appearing to be inns or teahouses with particular procedures for a discreet entry or even with secret tunnels for a discreet exit were built in Edo and in Kyoto.
