New festivities at Shibuya

Even on a “normal” day, Shibuya Crossing can be mayhem, but this madness turns into some spooky chaos during Halloween. In order to ensure the safety of this unofficial outdoor event, Police officers are dislocated in groups around the area. Their tightly ordered ranks and matched attire contrast with the laughing disarray of the cheerful crowd.

Originally a holiday celebrated more by expats, Halloween has been steadily building momentum becoming something of an autumn festival in many areas all over Japan. Over the past few year, Shibuya Halloween became a close to a million people gathering drawing huge crowds of giddy, costume-wearing people, many of who are looking to take part in unofficial street parties and roam the area’s streets in search of fun.
