Hill in Nagatacho, towards Ginza

Policemen guard access to the building of the National Diet of Japan. Dominating the beautiful avenue of gingko trees that runs from Ginza through Sakuradamon, the impressive building stands on a hill in the Nagatacho district of Chiyoda City in Tokyo. In front of it lies the Diet Front Garden, an urban oasis.

The construction of the building for the old Diet of Japan began in 1920; however, plans for the building date back to the late 1880s. The Diet met in temporary structures for the first fifty years of its existence because there was no agreement over what form its building should take.
