MacArthur road outside Toranomon slope

Under a crescent moon laying in the winter sky, cars are emerging from the tunnel under the Toranomon slope in the so-called “MacArthur Road”, a long unrealized redevelopment project plan.

There had been plans since 1946 to define a new arterial road between Toranomon and Shimbashi as part of a loop road around central Tokyo. The schedule remained unrealized for decades, until 1989. It involved the construction of a new skyscraper above the road and the creation of a system for duplex use of road space.
