Kanda, Jimbōchō Book Town

Autumn

From a dyers’ quarter in Edo times, Kanda district has shifted into being one of the world’s largest areas of bookstores. Strips of freshly dyed fabrics are no longer a common sight giving their place to bookshops signs and lanterns marking the presence of book stalls during the annual book festival held in autumn.

Notes

Multiple universities established campuses in Jinbōchō, Tokyo following the Meiji Restoration in 1868, including the University of Tokyo, Gakushuin University, Ochanomizu University, and Senshu University, among others. The presence of these institutions attracted bookstores catering to university professors and students that sold textbooks and other academic reference materials.
