A unique opportunity to pair the collectable print from Tokyo Hyaku with an exquisite hand-made reproduction of Edo Hyakkei made the masters of Adachi Hanga.
The Tokyo Hyaku photograph is named Daiba, Birds Island.
The Ukiyo-e print is named Suijin Woods and Masaki on the Sumida River Banks. It shows a compositional plan still more compound than any prints in this series. The artist’s eyes have already been brought up to the top of a small hill. The cherry branches extending this way are shown large in close view, then travelers on the road and a shrine (perhaps Mimeguri) in pine grove in shallow bird’s-eye view. Such a composition as this has no similar example in the series, making it a unique piece.
The Ukiyo-e is printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi (a unique kind of Japanese paper) handmade by Ichibei Iwano, a living national treasure. This makes the vivid colors and the soft, warm textures of woodcut prints come to life.
