Sleepless town of Kabukicho

The red Kabukichō Ichiban-gai gate, near the southwest corner along Yasukuni-Dōri, marks the entrance of the entertainment district in Shinjuku. After the sun has set this become the meeting point for many people ready to enjoy the night in this adult quarter of the city.

In post-World War II Japan, plans were underway to build a bustling shopping district in Shinjuku in 1948. They wanted to build a place to see kabuki theater, and that’s when Kabukicho was born. Even though the theater was never built, it remains known as the entertainment district Kabukicho.
