At the times of Edo, scenes with a perspective from such heights as the one depicted by Hiroshige were rare. Today it is easy to have a bird’s-eye view in Tokyo, and sky rise towers, such as the Tokyo Skytree, are popular attractions.
Notes
Being the tallest structure in Japan, with its full height of 634 meters (634 can be read as “Musashi”, a historic name of the Tokyo Region), the Skytree have become the most visible landmark of the city. For this reason, in many instances, it substitutes Hiroshige’s Mt. Fuji thought Tokyo Hyaku’s images.
